Review #3 - Bunnahabhain Darach Ur

The final review from the small Christmas set a co worker provided me. Bunnahabhain Darach Ur Un Chillfiltered 46.3% Alcohol

Color: Golden. Bunnahabhain's scotches all have beautiful color, I'm unsure if they use caramel coloring. (Added note: it actually says natural colour on the bottle. Someone later pointed this out to me.)

Nose: Grassy. Not much to the nose on this scotch, oddly. Smells a touch sweet.

Palate: Big wood flavors, sweet and a touch spicy. Like a cinnamon caramel. Then the wood comes through again as it slips off your tongue, like a sweet and resinous pine.

Finish: The wood finishes this out, with sweetness. The finish is what I imagine an oak flavored toffee would be.

Verdict:★★
An interesting dram. Woody and sweet are the main things going on here, which is I guess why it's "New Oak". Looking back I seemed to have felt this tasted like a spiced candy of some sort. Not a bad scotch, but not exactly my thing.

And we're back to the present day. It's Christmas time, I'm on vacation, and I'm about to make sourdough bread. I think I'll start the day with a dram (and after taking notes for this review, that Millionaire Shortbread I made.) Nose : Apple, pear, honey, light toasted grains, poached plums, nutmeg, almonds. Palate : Nutmeg, red wine, toffee, caramel, toasted oats. Finish : Short. Orchard fruits, vanilla, light caramel, and something just slightly bitter. Verdict : I'll always have a love for Black Bush. It reminds me of my dad. He drank Bushmills when he could afford it when I was growing up. We drank it at his wake and his funeral. It's a pleasant whiskey, a fair step up from the base blended 80% grain/20% malt white label Bushmills, as Black Bush is 80% malt/20% grain. Nose: Warm honey. Clotted cream. Ripe pear, bitter orange peel, apple, a little fennel seed. Palate: The honey sweetness continues. Fresh crushed malt, sweet cream, pear, dried orange, lemon, a little pineapple. Hints of oak and vanilla. Finish: Medium. Sweet oak and a dusting of cinnamon. Verdict: It's a fine whiskey. But it's not a great one. Comparing this to the 16 year, though, this falls far, far short of it. The 16 was my favorite warm summer day scotch. This is...boring. Would I buy this: At the price they want for it, not a chance. Would I order this in a bar: Probably not. Would I drink this if someone gave me a glass: Sure! It's certainly not bad. It's just not memorable or exciting in any way. Rating:★★

I've been drinking for a while. I'm 41 years old. I started drinking when I was 19. Prior to that, in high school, I was the non-drinker who looked old enough to buy booze, so everyone else came to me to buy their stuff for parties. I'd seen too much of the dark side of drinking, in my family, in friends, and in the world at large. And the things I'd tasted didn't thrill me. So I'd buy people their booze, come to the party, remain sober, break up the occasional fight, and drive everyone home. I just didn't have an interest in drinking. As I got older, that changed.
