Review #88 - Ardmore 10 2009—2020 Single Cask Nation 58.8% First Fill Bourbon

Nose: Malt, pine tar, vanilla, spiced apples, dry wood smoke, lemon pith. Weirdly reminds me of lemon filled jelly donuts.

Palate: Lemon meringue pie, bright clean wood smoke, parker house rolls, vanilla, coconut, custard.

Finish: Vanilla, black pepper, smoke, lemon, slate.

Final thoughts: Very nice. Balanced, delicious, bright and sprightly. Not much of an after dinner dram, honestly. It's bright and exciting.

Would I buy this: I would, as long as it wasn't too dear.

Would I order this in a bar: It would be a fantastic aperitif!

Would I drink this if someone gave me a glass: Definitely.

Verdict: Thumbs up!

BrianRampage included a mystery whiskey sample along with the Old Forester 1920 sample I had and reviewed this morning. I've been good all day with calories to burn, even after getting called by work. Let's see if I can figure out what this is! Nose : Big vanilla and a blast of alcohol. This has got to be north of 110 proof and bourbon, or my senses have failed me. Corn, roasted peanuts, cinnamon. Palate : Vanilla, toffee, peanuts, pepper. The burnt toffee peanut flavor that was echoed on the nose makes me think Beam product based on my limited Bourbon experience. This is over 120 proof, maybe even at 130. There are hints of dark chocolate, and the cinnamon spiciness makes it taste like Mexican chocolate for a moment in the middle. This is racy hot. I'm going to add some water to this after a few more sips. Finish : Medium-long and dry. Oak and vanilla with a touch of spicy cinnamon predominate. Review #42 - Bushmills Black Bush

And we're back to the present day. It's Christmas time, I'm on vacation, and I'm about to make sourdough bread. I think I'll start the day with a dram (and after taking notes for this review, that Millionaire Shortbread I made.) Nose : Apple, pear, honey, light toasted grains, poached plums, nutmeg, almonds. Palate : Nutmeg, red wine, toffee, caramel, toasted oats. Finish : Short. Orchard fruits, vanilla, light caramel, and something just slightly bitter. Verdict : I'll always have a love for Black Bush. It reminds me of my dad. He drank Bushmills when he could afford it when I was growing up. We drank it at his wake and his funeral. It's a pleasant whiskey, a fair step up from the base blended 80% grain/20% malt white label Bushmills, as Black Bush is 80% malt/20% grain. Review #63 - Benriach 18 Year Tawny Port Astor Cask Selection

This dram was a mystery included in my 2018 Secret Santa swap. It was tasted and reviewed blind. Nose: Stewed plums, cocoa, toasted nuts, clove, Virginia pipe tobacco, honey, vanilla, raspberries. Palate: Sweet red berries, vanilla, oak, rich cocoa, figs, dark cherries, caramel, black pepper, honey. Finish: Finish is long. Dry and tannic, but with a little caramel and clove at the tail. Verdict: Definitely some heat. Like 100-110 proof, maybe? It's very rich. I think it's port finished, based on what I'm tasting. Would I buy this: Depending on price, I would. Given it's from Astor, maybe not. But it's awfully good. Would I order this in a bar: I would, definitely. Delicious dram. Would I drink this if someone gave me a glass: Oh, yes please! Rating: ★★★★
